What is this RSS feed thingy?

What is this RSS feed thingy?

Some jargon for you:? RSS stands for “really simple syndication” and is one of the newest web formats to distribute information. Many websites -including the NDCUA website - distribute their content through RSS to whomever wants it.

Why is RSS good?
RSS solves two very important problems with web content distribution. Firstly, it allows you (the subscriber who wants this information) to stay up-to-date by retrieving the latest content from your favourite websites without having to actually visit them (this is a huge time saver)… and second, RSS helps you protect your privacy by not having to give out your e-mail address to join each website’s newsletter. An added benefit to the website owner is that his/her subscribers can actually get the information! With so much spam around, good legitimate mail often gets trapped with the real spam in filters. As an example for one word only - quite often you see FREE written as FRE..E so the spam filters miss the word and the genuine mail gets through.

All I’ve got to say for now is the spammers will get what’s coming to them. RSS has solved that challenge but people who are not technically savvy yet - are still requiring education on the topic, hence I have written this little summary.

How to subscribe to an RSS feed.
Fortunately it is easy! There are two main ways

  1. A feed reader program that resides on their computer such as Amphetadesk (Windows, Linux, Mac) and NewsGator
  2. Through an internet based RSS reader service (my preferred method as it is easy) such as Bloglines, My Yahoo, and Google Reader are among the most popular

I use my web browser (Firefox) to integrate my chosen feed reader google. You can do this too with the other two popular web browsers (Microsoft IE and Opera). Now what this feed reader stuff all simply means is that when you open your favourite web browser a little icon unobtrusively advises you that a web page or two has written some new content.

There is no pop ups to annoy you so when you feel like it you just visit the reader and see a topic summary. If you are interested (most likely as you signed up for the content in the first place) then it is there for you to read.

How to subscribe to the NDCUA RSS feed.
If you are new to RSS, we recommend that you try Google Reader’s service.

On the other hand, if you’re an avid RSS subscriber, just join using your favourite reader:

So just click here to subscribe. It is that easy!

What else can you do?

You can also just download our toolbar and you'll be automatically subscribed to the NDCUA blog only.

So if you find other sites you like with RSS content, you'll have to join a reader service. Like I said I like everything google because it is so easy.

all the best

Hi ndcua members,

Around 1 month ago I sent out an email, to which there have been no responses yet.

The email asked, who is this umpire????? He is currently in our ranks.

Have a guess by writing a comment to this story.

Name will be revealed during the October meeting (which is also a seminar).

Just letting you know that 30 Jan - 2 Feb 2009 No 1 Sportsground will be the venue for a Sheffield Shield match. (Comp renamed back from Pura Cup this season onwards in case you didn't know).

There is no grade cricket that weekend.

Free up your diary to see this (hopefully yearly event from now on!).

All is recorded on the Google Calendar (up the top of this page).

Cricket Australia announces 2008-09 international program

An Australian 2008-09 international cricket season featuring a joust between the top two ranked one-day international sides, a new one-day format and the addition of a third international KFC Twenty20 match, was announced today.

Australia will play two separate five-match Commonwealth Bank Series, the first against world number one-ranked South Africa throughout January and the second a traditional Trans Tasman battle against New Zealand for the Chappell Hadlee Trophy during February.

This will follow five 3 mobile Test matches, two against New Zealand in November and early December and three against South Africa in December and January.

A third KFC Twenty20 International has been added to the schedule this season, with two being played against South Africa in Melbourne and Brisbane and a third scheduled against New Zealand in Sydney.

The international cricket summer returns to the traditional late November launch and February finish after global programming challenges resulted in an extended season last summer.

The traditional elements of the summer have been retained with Brisbane again hosting the opening international match of the season when Australia meets New Zealand in the first 3 mobile Test match. Other icon events will see Australia taking on South Africa in the 3 mobile Boxing Day and 3 mobile New Year’s Tests in Melbourne and Sydney respectively.

The Sydney Test against South Africa will start on 3 January to allow players a recovery period between Test matches.

Australia will look to hold onto the Chappell Hadlee Trophy during its five-match Commonwealth Bank Series against the Black Caps to be played during February.

Adelaide will host the Australia Day match next year in the format of a one-day Commonwealth Bank Series match between Australia and South Africa.

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said: “A new look ODI format now features Australia in every Commonwealth Bank Series match.

“Two head-to-head contests against current number one-ranked South Africa and against New Zealand, give us the new ability to promise fans the first-hand opportunity to see their Australian heroes in action every time they attend or tune in to an Australian summer ODI,” he said.

There are three tour matches scheduled this summer, including a Tasmanian fixture against South Africa in Hobart from 20-22 December, which follows the South African tour match against Western Australia in Perth from 6-8 December.

New Zealand will also play one tour match from 13-16 November against NSW in Sydney. The details of the annual Prime Minister’s XI fixture in Canberra are still being finalised.

The international women’s season schedule will be announced shortly. The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars, Australia’s world champion women’s cricket team, will play India in five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 international in October/November this year in preparation for the ICC Women’s World Cup.

The ICC Women’s World Cup will feature the top eight women’s teams in world cricket and will be held in New South Wales and ACT from 7-22 March, 2009.

Live scores, match information, statistics, daily match highlights and behind the-scenes videos from the entire 2008-09 international season will again be available to all on www.cricket.com.au

Tickets to the 2008-09 international cricket season will go on sale in August 2009 with priority access once again available to eligible members of the Australian Cricket Family. Fans can register to be a member of the Australian Cricket Family at www.cricket.com.au

The 3 mobile Test series, Commonwealth Bank Series, and KFC Twenty20 international games will be broadcast live on Channel Nine, ABC Radio and through CA’s wireless rights partner 3 mobile. Fox Sports will again show highlights from the international matches, as well as telecast the interstate cricket season. 3 mobile subscribers will be able to watch live coverage and access match information via their 3 mobile handsets.

The 2008-09 interstate competition schedule will be released in the coming weeks.

Cricket Australia announces 2008-09 interstate cricket programs

Cricket Australia today announced the program for the 2008-09 Sheffield Shield presented by Weet-Bix, Ford Ranger Cup and Twenty20 Big Bash.

The season gets underway on Friday 10 October 2008 with XXXX GOLD Queensland Bulls taking on the PKF Tasmanian Tigers at the Gabba in the opening match of the Sheffield Shield presented by Weet-Bix. The opening Ford Ranger Cup clash will be between the South Australia West End Redbacks and Victoria VB Bushrangers at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday 15 October.

The festive time between 26 December and 4 January is expected to feature big crowds at interstate cricket, with the scheduling of eight Twenty20 Big Bash matches during that holiday period.

The carnival-style atmosphere of the shortest form of the game will add a fantastic flavour to the warm and relaxed festive break.

Cricket Australia will also deliver interstate cricket to community venues with matches being hosted in Newcastle and Wollongong in New South Wales, Geelong in Victoria, Cairns in Queensland and Bunbury in Western Australia. It will be the first time ever an interstate match has been hosted outside of the WACA Ground in Western Australia.

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said: “We have made some slight tweaks to the interstate fixture this summer and believe that it provides fans around the country with excellent access to see fantastic cricket.

“We have added to the festive cricket flavour of Boxing Day by including the opener of the Twenty20 Big Bash at the Gabba that evening.

“This will be the dream day for Queensland cricket fans who, after having tuned-in to the coverage of the 3 mobile Boxing Day Test on the Nine Network, can then go to the Gabba that evening for the XXXX GOLD Bulls match against the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues,” Mr Sutherland said.

Fox Sports will again lead the television coverage of the Australian interstate season, with over 200 hours of live interstate cricket, including more than 70 hours in High Definition coverage, scheduled for fans. This includes 21 Ford Ranger Cup matches, 12 Twenty20 Big Bash games and the final of the Sheffield Shield presented by Weet-Bix.

“Fox Sports’ commitment to show a fantastic range of interstate cricket is great for cricket fans around the country,” Mr Sutherland said.

ABC local radio and ABC online will also continue its commitment to Australian cricket with regular coverage of all three interstate cricket competitions throughout the season.

The Women’s National Cricket League will have five rounds this season as well as five Twenty20™ fixtures. Four of the Twenty20™ fixtures will be played as double-headers to the men’s Twenty20 Big Bash matches. The Adelaide Oval will also host a day-night match between South Australia Scorpions and NSW Wolf Blass Breakers on 21 December.
